RVH Physician wins Human Touch Award

Today one of Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre’s (RVH) most dedicated and caring physicians was recognized for his outstanding work in cancer care. Dr. Bryn Pressnail, clinical director, Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Program, was one of six Ontarians to receive a Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) Human Touch Award.

“Dr. Pressnail has been one of the strongest advocates of the RVH Cancer Program since its creation. His commitment to ensuring people with cancer get the safest and best care possible led him to play a pivotal role in ensuring the dream of the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Care became a reality,” says Janice Skot, RVH president and CEO.  “On many occasions it was Dr. Pressnail’s passionate plea for support, made on behalf of his patients too ill to speak for themselves, that helped build our case for support. It is truly fitting that Dr. Pressnail received this prestigious award only weeks away from the opening of RVH’s Phase 1 Expansion Project and the cancer centre he worked so hard to see built.”

The Human Touch Award is given annually to caregivers who provide exceptional and compassionate patient care, demonstrate leadership in their area of work, engage patients, families and caregivers in decision making and help to improve patients’ access to services and there is no doubt that Dr. Pressnail does all that and much more.

“Dr. Pressnail was nominated for this award by his peers in the cancer program, which speaks volumes about the high regard in which he is held.  However, no one knows better how deserving Dr. Pressnail is of a Human Touch Award than his patients,” says Skot.

In the nomination package one patient writes:

“He always made me feel like I was most important to him.  When he speaks to me, he speaks directly to me and gives the same respect to my family. His compassion for me and my desire to live has helped me get though some very tough times.”

“We are very fortunate to have a physician of Dr. Pressnail’s skill, compassion and commitment to patient-centred care in our midst. On behalf of our Board of Directors, staff, physicians and volunteers – and most importantly, the patients entrusted to our care -- we congratulate Dr. Pressnail on this prestigious award,” says Skot.
